Doras Bui is a community resource centre for one parent families located on the north east side of Dublin City, Ireland.
Historically attitudes to one parent families in Ireland have been stigmatising and negative. This situation was reflected in public policy and while attitudes have improved somewhat, significant numbers of one parent families live in poverty and continue to face many obstacles in accessing services appropriate to their specific needs. Doras Bui provide services including information, advice and advocacy on a wide range of topics including social welfare, health, parenting and legal issues and personal matters and information about statutory services. They have a full time Crèche for the under-fives to support lone parents to return to education or take up training or employment opportunities. Counselling is offered for children who despite the best efforts of parents, following marital separation, suffer from a loss of self- esteem, feelings of bereavement and loss which manifests in challenging and difficult behaviour, poor school performance and emotional difficulties.
Our work with one parent families encourages social and economic independence and our way of working offers people the stepping stones and building blocks to take control of their lives. Doras Bui are proud of Their inclusive and supportive organisational culture and environment. They aim to ensure that everyone who attends their centre feels they are valued and respected alike.
All activities provided come from the needs of parents expressed at regular consultation meetings and are delivered in a spirit of solidarity and professionalism and guided by the following principles:
Access to accurate information;
